F- and C-Block Licensee Goes Live With AirNet’s GSM Base Station Subsystem
Melbourne, Florida - AirNet Communications Corporation announced today that its personal communication services (PCS) base station subsystem (BSS) began commercial service in Kentucky. Third Kentucky Cellular Corporation, marketed as Wireless 2000 PCS, deployed AirNet’s BSS equipment in the first phase of its rollout of PCS services. The initial markets deployed were Corbin, Williamsburg, and London, Kentucky, which were acquired in the PCS F- and C-Block auctions. Included in the deployment are AirNet’s software-defined, high capacity base transceiver station (BTS) and innovative AirSite(TM) remote radio products.
"Our installation went smoothly and our voice quality is top notch," said Thomas G. Ward, president of Third Kentucky Cellular Corporation. "AirNet’s solution allows us to compete with existing carriers by providing quality, low-cost services while covering a larger area with less infrastructure."
A key in providing maximum coverage area at a low cost is AirNet’s AirSite remote radio product. AirSite provides early seamless PCS telephony coverage in low traffic density clusters of cells. This concept takes advantage of AirNet’s high capacity 96 channel BTS, extending the frequencies across a much larger area thus providing greater coverage.
"We are very pleased with Third Kentucky’s PCS deployment," said Jerry Adams, president and chief executive officer of AirNet Communications. "Our PCS system helps them enter the market economically while growing with them as their capacity requirements change."
AirNet’s innovative AirSite remote radio does not require microwave or wireline connections to the BTS, but uses in-band frequency for backhaul. With the ability of the BTS to accommodate up to 12 AirSites, the cost savings in monthly backhaul are substantial. Also, as capacity needs increase, AirSite units can be replaced by high-capacity base stations and relocated to other sites to expand the coverage area.
"Third Kentucky, like other PCS carriers who are initially concerned about coverage, can benefit greatly from AirNet’s PCS solution," said Glenn Ehley, AirNet’s vice president of Sales and Marketing. "We understand the concerns of carriers and provide a very graceful migration path for future capacity needs."
